Shiva is seated on a pedestal holding a deer and axe in his two hands.  The deer is s symbol of how all the earths creatures revere Shiva as their lord.  The axe is a symbolic weapon meant for the destruction of lost souls.  The overall pose is something the Rajas of the Chola period would appreciate.  A truly timeless pose of Lord Shiva, stoic and worthy of veneration.  Shiva boasts a magnificent headdress full of small details like a cobra and waxing moon.  He wears both a woman's earring and man's earring each accompanied by a mythical Yali.  Lord Shiva pays homage to his wife Parvati and to all women by this humble act of wearing a woman's earring.  His large third eye, a symbol of higher consciousness rests firmly between his two open eyes.
